The classic tale of a young woman swept into a whirlwind romance by a wealthy widower. Will the world ever stop comparing the new Mrs. De Winter to the glamourous first wife, Rebecca? Even after reading it so many times, this book still has the ability to suck me in. As I have grown older my perceptions of the book have drastically changed. As a younger reader I related to our protagonist and thought the story was so romantic. Now that I am older I relate more to the idea of loving your spouse completely— and it got me questioning how far I would go to protect those I love? Could I forgive them anything? It also leads one to ponder the pitfalls of loving "things" instead of loving others or a higher power. I no longer find the story as romantic as l once did; as an older reader I now see red flags. I am still impressed with several things that the author did in this book- I do not want to give anything away so I shall leave it at that. I highly recommend this book; it makes you think and it is well-written without falling into the myriad of possible story telling traps. If you are a fan of Jane Eyre you will enjoy Rebecca. I personally could have done without the afterword included in this particular edition, luckily I have an old copy from 1938 in my library (without the added content) that l adore.
